Genesee Circuit Judge Archie Hayman sentenced Mark Anthony Jones Jr. Friday, May 9, to (only) 40-60 years in prison after he was convicted of first-degree felony murder for the Nov. 16, 2010, fatal shooting and robbery of 73-year-old Merlyne Wray.     Black rapist wants to take back his serial rape plea
Anthony VaughnKadi CrnkovichOMAHA, Neb. — Anthony Vaughn went back-and-forth with prosecutors the morning his trial in a series of serial rapes was set to begin. In the end, the trial never happened. Vaughn instead struck a deal, changing his not guilty pleas to no contest pleas. Judge Mark Ashford found the 42-year-old guilty -- setting him up for nearly 140 years in prison. "He will be behind bars for the rest of his life," Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said of the deal. The bargain also meant Vaughn's victims wouldn't have to testify in court. Now, a new court filing shows Vaughn has had a change of heart. The convicted rapist wants the judge to throw out his no contest pleas. He made that intention clear in a letter dated May 2. - (Black-on-white)

Alex Mapleblack stabberCrime anywhere is senseless, but when an attacker strikes at one of the busiest intersections in the city of Minneapolis so violently it becomes unnerving. The victims are students at the University of Minnesota and are roommates in the area where they were attacked at University and Hennepin Avenues in northeast Minneapolis.     Rejecting 'retarded' label could cost accused black killer his life
John G. Deloney. Richard EvansJohn Deloney is insulted by a legal definition and won't use it even though it could save his life. "Let's go ahead and start the trial with the death penalty. That's what I want," Deloney told Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Ethna Cooper in a Friday hearing. Deloney, accused of shooting a Hartwell pizzeria owner to death during a June 15 robbery, is upset that his attorneys are trying to prove he's what Ohio law calls "mentally retarded." While many find the term offensive, "mentally retarded" in Ohio law is defined as having an IQ under 70. That could be a lifesaver for Deloney because in Ohio those declared mentally retarded are ineligible for the death penalty. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Deloney, accusing him of using a gun to rob Richard Evans, the owner of Cosmic Pizza, and then shoot him as Evans ran away. Evans died minutes later in the front yard of the pizzeria in his wife's arms. - (Black-on-white)

Michael D. PurnellDorothy L. GudgerGEORGETOWN – A handyman who pleaded guilty to raping and killing a 70-year-old woman in his neighborhood got two life sentences and an additional 75-year sentence. Michael D. Purnell, 45, was convicted in March of second-degree murder, first-degree rape, burglary and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony. Purnell was arrested in November 2011 after neighbors discovered Dorothy L. Gudger, 70, of the Oak Orchard area, dead in her home. Police said Purnell, who’d done repair work for Gudger, raped her on Oct. 31, 2011, then strangled her with a belt and suffocated her with a plastic bag. At the time, Purnell was a registered sex offender with several previous criminal convictions, including ones on charges of identity theft and escaping from work release. The month before he killed Gudger, he’d been convicted of felony theft from a senior citizen in Kent County, court records show, but a two-year prison sentence for that crime was suspended in lieu of a year of probation. - (Black-on-white)
