Suspect Caught in Atlanta Shootings * Massive Manhunt Comes to an End     The suspect in the Atlanta shooting deaths of a judge, a federal agent and two other people was captured on Saturday after triggering a massive manhunt that ended in a neighboring Georgia county. Brian Nichols, 33, surrendered at an apartment complex surrounded by a SWAT team in Gwinnett County north of Atlanta about 26 hours after he fled the downtown courthouse where he had opened fire on Friday. Nichols gave himself up without a struggle after a woman tipped police that he had entered her apartment, authorities said. The woman, who police said was not acquainted with Nichols, escaped unharmed.
Word of Nichols' capture came after Atlanta police disclosed they were investigating the fatal shooting of David Wilhelm, a U.S. Customs agent several miles north of where the courthouse killings occurred. Trial date set for Tampa murder suspect   A Hillsborough County judge set a trial date Thursday for one of the suspects in the beating death of a Tampa teen. Laisha Landrum's trial is scheduled June 20. She is accused of helping her boyfriend, Rocky Almestica, beat his former girlfriend, 16-year-old Emily Clemons, then leaving her to die in a north Tampa apartment Dumpster on June 9 of last year. Almestica was sentenced Jan. 3 to life in prison. Landrum, 17, is facing first-degree murder and tampering charges. Emily was 14 when she started "dating" Almestica and 16 when she was killed. - Is there a lesson or moral somewhere here? Convicted murdered Terrell Yarbrough to be retried in '99 killings  A man convicted and sentenced to die four years ago in Ohio for the shooting deaths of two college students will be retried in Washington County later this year. The murder conviction of Terrell Yarbrough was overturned by the Ohio Supreme Court, which ruled Yarbrough was tried in the wrong state for the 1999 shooting deaths of Aaron Land, 20, of Philadelphia, and Brian Muha, 18, of Westerville, Ohio. Yarbrough and a co-defendant, Nathan Herring, were accused of robbing and kidnaping Land and Muha from their apartment at Franciscan University in Steubenville on May 31, 1999. Land and Muha, who were attending summer classes at the school, were forced into Muha's Chevrolet Blazer. Convicted sex offender charged in rape of 13-year-old girl A registered sex offender was arrested and charged with three counts of raping a 13-year-old girl, less than a year since his arrest for a similar crime, Southampton Town police said Friday. Kevin D. Cooks, 21, of 21 Wooded Way in Calverton, was taken into custody after the girl's mother told the police Wednesday that he was sexually involved with her daughter, who is incapable of legally consenting to sex because she is a minor. On March 12, 2004, Cooks was arrested on rape and sodomy charges stemming from an ongoing sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl. - (Brewski) |
Arlington pastor indicted in sexual assaults of three congregants ARLINGTON, Texas The pastor of an Arlington nondenominational church is facing charges of sexually assaulting three women from his congregation.Forty-three-year-old Terry L. Hornbuckle was arrested yesterday on four counts of sexual assault. Three women say Hornbuckle tried to entice them into sex by using his influence as minister of the Agape Christian Fellowship. Humiliation may have spurred killings Terrence D. Moore shot Terry Jasper because Jasper "punked," or embarrassed, him, a Douglas County prosecutor said Thursday. Moore then turned the gun on Jasper's longtime girlfriend, who was asleep, so she wouldn't tell anyone, said the prosecutor. Moore was charged with two counts each of first-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony in the Feb. 25 deaths of Jasper, 41, and Diane Caveye, 35. Men Face Judge In Home Invasion and Gang Rape of 13-year-old Girl - then set her on fire   Two men face a judge in a preliminary examination on Wednesday for allegedly attacking a teenage girl during a home invasion. Ronald Kinney, 18, and Andres Montgomery, 25, were charged last month with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, home invasion and assault with intent to do great bodily harm. Police said Kinney and Montgomery entered through an open door at a home where a 13-year-old girl was sleeping. The two men allegedly raped the teen and set her hair afire before leaving the home with the girl's computer, police said. |

Negro parking garage robbers awarded with free room and board for leaving a White man paralyzed for life    The image of Michael Lahoff in a hospital bed detailing how his life was destroyed by a street robber's bullet brought many people in the courtroom to tears. The two men convicted of paralyzing Lahoff in a parking garage sat stone-faced, though, until the Judge announced their punishment. Triggerman Marty Allen Armstrong, 21, cried as the judge sentenced him to 25 to 50 years in prison for what the judge called a "horrendous, vicious and senseless crime." Md. Inmate Charged With Strangling Convict  An inmate who killed his cellmate a year ago and warned a judge he might kill again was indicted Monday on charges of strangling a 20-year-old convict aboard a prison bus. Kevin G. Johns Jr., 22, could get the death penalty in the killing last month of Philip Eugene Parker Jr. He was strangled aboard a bus carrying five armed guards and 35 prisoners in handcuffs and leg irons. A day before the killing, Johns told a judge that he would kill again unless he got psychiatric help. |
Miami Police Arrest Kidnap, Rape Suspect A man accused of kidnapping and raping a woman at gunpoint last week is now behind bars. Police arrested Alvin Merritt, 55, Saturday. He is charged with armed sexual battery and armed abduction. Investigators said Merrit kidnapped the woman from a bus stop along Northwest 14th Avenue and 54th Street, took her to his home, raped her several times and let her go.

St. Petersburg Police looking for short pockmarked Black with Afro who tried to rape 16-year-old girl Police are looking for a man they say tried to rape a 16-year-old girl while she was on her way to her school bus stop Feb. 25. He grabbed her from behind and ripped her shirt, but she broke free and ran. The man ran after her, caught her and pushed her to the ground, all the while managing to get his pants down. | Philadelphia: Teen with "medium to dark complexion" charged in series of at least five rapes Police have arrested 19-year-old Christopher Williams in connection with five rapes and robberies Teen Rape Suspect Charged  Capt. John Darb: "This individual is identified as a Christopher David Williams, he's a 19-year-old black male."The suspect is being charged in four of the five attacks in a one square mile area of Feltonville. Man Sentenced In BSU Student's Shooting Death that netted $2  A man who admitted he shot and killed a University student was sentenced to 85 years in prison. Damien Sanders, 23, pleaded guilty to murder and armed robbery in connection with the 2004 death of Karl Harford. Harford, 20, was robbed by Sanders and two other people after Harford offered them a ride home from an off-campus party. Sanders testified that he shot Harford during the robbery that netted Harford's attackers only $2. Harford's body was found later in an alley One of the other suspects, Brandon L. The Mobile Police Department says 10 of 11 victims in the West Mobile attacks have either seen a photo spread, live line-up or heard a voice line up. "We have other elements and other aspects of the investigation that we're looking into. "He's had burglary arrests, marijuana and cocaine arrests." Mobile County District Attorney says Moffett has 2 misdemeanor convictions and 2 felony convictions. He's done time for illegal possession of a credit card and possession of cocaine. James Orlando Washington, 25, was arrested Tuesday after a police officer saw a young woman running from his car, saying Washington had handcuffed and raped her. Police said that in both rapes, the victims were handcuffed and raped while in Washington's vehicle. In addition to the two rapes, police said he also is a suspect in two other rapes in Hammond and Portage, and he's awaiting trial in Lake County for a rape investigated by Hobart police.
